WINFIELD ? The Winfield-Mt. Union softball team fell to Pekin in a slugfest last night, 15-12.
?There were a lot of hits,? W-MU Coach Amanda Darbyshire said.
For the Wolves, Katelyn McArtor went 3-for-4 with a double and Shelby Therme was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Kenzi Sternat went 2-for-5 on the night with three RBIs.
The Wolves also saw hits from Kassidy Mclaughlin and Paige Breon. Rachel Anderson had an RBI.
McLaughlin took the loss on the mound. She gave up 12 hits, walked none and struck out three.
?With as many hits as there were on both sides, it came down to who made the last few errors and who got the last few runs. We did leave a few on base, but overall it was a better game,? Darbyshire said.
The first time W-MU played against Pekin was on May 22. It was the Wolves? second game of the season ? and they lost, 10-2.
?We weren?t ready for softball season (at that point),? Darbyshire said. ?We were still in track and golf mode.?
Last night, Pekin (now 11-8 on the season) had to fight a lot harder against a W-MU team that is improving.
?We?re getting better,? Darbyshire said, ?and eventually the wins will come.?
The Wolves are 4-10 overall and 1-9 in the conference, but are hoping to even those numbers out by the end of the season.
They will get the chance to up their record tomorrow at the Washington Invitational, which begins at 9 a.m.
