Pekin softball defeats Wapello 12-4

WAPELLO ? Pekin received at least one hit from nine of its players and rolled to a 12-4 win over Wapello in Southeast Iowa Superconference softball Monday.

Madelyn Baker and Caylee Johnson led the way with two hits apiece at the bottom of the lineup, Tori Davis had a triple and two RBI and Maranda Baker tripled in three runs.

?I liked the contributions from the bottom of the lineup tonight,? said Pekin head coach Bryan Marlay. ?I was very pleased with a lot of our girls tonight.?

Usually resilient starter Leslie Stone took the mound for Pekin but had to be pulled due to injury, and Cheyann Lankford answered the call.

Lankford earned her second victory of the season, tossing the final six innings in relief and allowing two runs ? one earned. She allowed eight hits and fanned six.

?We took Leslie out because of a medical issue, and Cheyann stepped right in and did an outstanding job and just kind of controlled the game,? said Marlay.

The Panthers, who avenged an earlier season loss to Wapello, will be looking to do the same today when they host Columbus.

?We?ve just got to keep playing good, solid softball,? Marlay added. ?We?re playing for a little bit of conference pride and trying to work hard at it.?

The Panthers are now 13-10 overall and 7-5 in the SEISC north.
