The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce put on a pair of “Bike Rodeos” at Pence Elementary School in Fairfield on May 5 and May 12 during the school’s after-school program.
The event was tailored to children in second through fourth grades to teach them the proper way to ride a bicycle safely. They learned the necessary skills and precautions for their age range to help them be better riders.
A Bike Rodeo is a hands-on event that leads children through a series of skill-building workshops. At a culmination of the event, children rode their bicycles through an obstacle course, putting to practice their newly acquired knowledge.
Pence’s after-school program, known as the Community and Character program, collaborated with Jefferson County 4-H, The Ride bike shop, the Iowa Bike Coalition, the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Fairfield Police Department to train students in bike safety. Students were issued a certificate of completion from police officers after finishing the course.
