WASHINGTON — A rotation of pianists kept Washington Public Library patrons entertained last week, playing in 20-minute shifts throughout the day.
While not every time slot was filled, Library Director Cary Ann Siegfried said many patrons stepped up at the last second.
“We’ve had a few lulls throughout the day, but I’ve also been going around asking people who come in if they play the piano or not,” she said. “We’ve actually picked up a few people that way, people I had no idea played the piano.”
Siegfried said the event may become an annual affair.
“As far as library staff goes, we’ve had a wonderful time just being able to sit around and listen to piano music,” she said. “Some people have loved it and suggested we make it a holiday tradition.”
The all-day sound provided an opportunity for musicians, as well, according to Siegfried.
“It’s such a wonderful piano, and an opportunity to play that in a low-key environment,” she said. “And the sound goes downstairs beautifully. So the people who come in just to check in books or do things downstairs have been listening to it too.”
