In the mood for something new?
Jeanette Bower and the Fairfield Park and Recreation Department are hoping that?s the case with the introduction of a new pickleball league this summer at the Fairfield Middle School tennis courts.
Starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, the free league will meet twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All ages are welcome.
Pickleball is a racquet sport which combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. It?s an accessible sport for all ages, said Bower, with a slower-moving ball and small, badminton-sized court.
?It?s good for any age, especially anybody in their advanced years,? said Bower. ?It?s good for people looking for exercise and who want to have fun.?
Although pickleball will be played on the tennis courts, the differences are numerous. One major difference, Bower said, is the social aspect of pickleball.
?Pickleball is a very social game,? she said. ?You?re closer to the players, and it?s not as competitive as tennis. It can be competitive but is a fun game.?
To get started, a set of four lessons will be given by Bower during the league?s first week. Doubles matches will then be played in subsequent weeks.
Registration is not necessary and people may join at any time. Balls and paddles will be provided initially for anyone wishing to try out the sport.
