WAPELLO ? A huge first half from Wapello was more than enough to top Cardinal in Class 1A, District 6 action Friday night in Wapello.
Four scores from Brandon Lincoln and Eric Garcia helped give Wapello a 48-7 halftime lead, and the Indians coasted in the second half to a 56-13 win.
Cardinal?s Dakota Showman, who went 7-of-14 for 161 yards passing, connected with Jimmy Edwards for a 62-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Tyler Batterson?s only passing attempt, a 9-yard strike to Quinn Honomichl, gave the Comets their second and final touchdown in the final period.
The Comet rushing game?s season-long struggles continued into Friday, and Cardinal mustered only 52 yards on the ground. Mike Owings and Nathan Yeager were the leading rushers with 29 and 23 yards, respectively.
Defensively, Yeager recorded eight tackles, Edwards had six stops and Owings recovered a fumble.
For Wapello (6-2, 3-2 Division 6), the win moves the Indians into a tie for the division?s fourth and final postseason spot alongside North Cedar. The two teams will duke it out in a nearly do-or-die matchup next week.
Cardinal, however, falls to 1-6 overall with an 0-5 divisional record. The Comets will host West Branch Friday.
