WASHINGTON — A copy of additional Call For Service logs obtained by The Southeast Iowa Union shed some light on an incident that left one person with a gunshot wound Wednesday morning, but plenty of questions remain unanswered.
Two of the CFS documents were not included in the county’s daily call log summary on Wednesday, but were obtained through a public records request. They showed a total of 15 county and city officers dispatched to 2705 Airport Road early in the morning on May 29, the first five arriving at 12:51 a.m., just six minutes after a 911 call came in. The call type was classified as a weapons violation.
According to that report, the caller said “someone (was) breaking the windows on their camper,” at 2705 Airport Road, and “advised that the male subject in the camper with her had been shot in the abdomen.”
The last officers on the scene left by 7:05 a.m., according to the dispatch report. Thursday morning’s CFS log said the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation helped three of those officers execute a search warrant on the same property around 5 a.m. Wednesday, but did not clarify the scope or purpose of the warrant.
The involvement of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation isn’t unheard of. The state agency has helped local police with gunfire-related investigations in the past, including one in Washington last October that damaged a vehicle but caused no injuries. DCI also frequently assists county and city departments with drug-related lab tests, investigations tied to public officials, and neglect allegations in foster homes.
With the Airport Road incident still under investigation, law enforcement representatives were hesitant to comment. Questions remain about who was shot, why someone may have broken the camper’s windows, or how those events might be connected. Police have not publicly announced any charges or arrests related to the incident, as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The male subject was hospitalized with his injury in Iowa City, and was in stable condition as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the county.
A few hours before the reported gunshot wound, one officer responded to the same address for a welfare check on someone who a caller said was “possibly assaulted.” That was just before 9 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a dispatch log, which said the parties involved were separated, but that no charges were filed.
It’s unclear how — or if — that incident was related to the call about a camper at the same address early the next morning.
