All hand-quilted items make this show unique
After being forced to take a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kalona Quilt Show and Sale is making a comeback this weekend.
The quilt show will be at the Kalona Community Center, 511 C Ave., Thursday through Saturday.
Show organizer Katie Karnes, co-owner of Woodin Wheel Antiques in Kalona, said that she is not sure how attendance will be at this year’s show.
“We’re hoping for the best that we’re going to have a great turnout,” Karnes said. “We don’t know what to expect.
“I know some people are eager to get out, while others are still staying in.”
This year’s quilt show is the 50th edition of the event and will feature approximately 200 quilts.
Karnes said that there will be a mixture of antique quilts from the 1850s to the 1940s and newer quilts.
As usual, the show will feature only hand-quilted items.
“That’s what makes our show unique from other shows,” Karnes said. “It’s all hand-quilted.”
She said there will be vendors at the show and a quilt raffle for the Kalona Historical Village.
The $6 admission for people ages 13 and up covers all three days of the show.
“People will be able to come and go as they please,” Karnes said.
Hours of the show are 5-8 p.m., Thursday; 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday.
“We are honored and excited to be able to have the show this year,” Karnes said. “We hope people will come out and have a great time.”
One of the usual satellite events, will not take place this year.
The Kalona United Methodist Church will not host its annual turkey dinner that traditionally coincides with the quilt show.
However, Sharon Bethel Mennonite Church will host a chicken dinner at Gospel Light Fellowship, 505 Sixth St., Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
