WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Surface Transportation Board has set its schedule for public meetings inviting comments on a proposed merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern railways.
The regulatory agency released a draft environmental impact assessment on the proposed merger Aug. 5, predicting that train traffic in Washington County would increase by about 14.4 trains per day (to a total of nearly 20) within 3 years if the merger is approved.
The meetings most accessible from Southeast Iowa include:
- Sept. 7, 6-8 p.m., online
- Sept. 8, 12-2 p.m., online
- Sept. 13, 6-8 p.m. at the River Center, 136 E. Third Street, Davenport, Iowa.
- Sept. 19, 6-8 p.m., online
Information about the merger and how to submit public comments can be found at the STB-sponsored website CP-KCSMergerEIS.com. The public comment period on the draft impact statement closes Sept. 26, 2022.
A Canadian Pacific train rolls through Washington in early February. The railway hopes to complete a merger with Kansas City Southern, a move that would increase average daily train counts in Washington County from 4.2 to over 19 (Kalen McCain/The Union)
