Real estate, mobile home taxes due before April

Second half real estate and mobile home taxes were due March 1 and must be paid by March 31 to avoid penalty. On April 1, a penalty of 1.5% per month (rounded to the nearest whole dollar with a $1.00 minimum) will attach.

In order to reduce wait times and provide the best service possible, the county treasurer encourages payments to be mailed to the Washington County Treasurer at PO Box 889, Washington, Iowa, 52353, or placed in the drop box located by the west door of the courthouse, or paid online at www.iowatreasurers.org.

“Our office can become quite congested this time of year,” Washington County Treasurer Jeff Garrett said. “These alternative payment methods will make paying your taxes much more convenient.”

Statement coupons must accompany payments. Payments sent by mail must have a U.S. Postal Service postmark date of March 31 or earlier to avoid penalty. Predated checks are not accepted as a substitute for the proper postmark. Taxes remaining unpaid on May 31, 2023, will be advertised as delinquent and those remaining unpaid on June 19, 2023, will be offered at the annual tax sale.
