Riverside council discusses street signs

   The Riverside City Council discussed its streets and its sewer at Monday?s regular meeting at City Hall. Public Works Supervisor Brad Herrig spoke about ordering new stop signs and street signs for the city. He proposed the city could save money by using a single post for a stop sign and street sign. He said he estimated he would need 25 posts and 25 stop signs, which he said would be about a quarter of the total number in town. He said many signs are faded and a few have been stolen.

    ?We?ve had a rash of missing stop signs over the last eight or nine months,? he said. ?There are quite a few that are missing anyway that will need to be replaced, regardless of what we decide to do here.?

    The city is planning to replace all its street signs. The street signs would be black with white lettering. He said Iowa Prison Industries is much cheaper than using private corporations. He said a company-made sign that meets the necessary reflectivity standards would cost $200 while a sign made by the prison industries costs $28.

    In other news, the council voted to maintain crosswalks at the north end of Kleopfer Avenue and at the east end of Buckeye Lane. The council also voted to install stop signs on Kleopfer Avenue where it meets Buckeye Lane. The council voted to change the speed limit to 15 miles per hour for Buckeye Lane, Kleopfer Avenue and Schnoebelen Street.
