FAIRFIELD — Upcoming road work on Highway 1 and 78 in Washington County is likely to complicate some residents’ commutes when it begins Monday, April 3. Construction crews plan to replace culverts and reconstruct the roadway during their work, scheduled to last until late October.
The construction will have two stages, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Transportation. The first stage will close the roadway from the Keokuk County Line to the entrance of Lake Darling from April 3 until early July. The second phase will close the road from Lake Darling to Brighton’s western city limits for the remainder of construction time.
Those traveling between Richland and Brighton will have a detour route that stretches miles north, taking them through Washington and West Chester along Highway 1, Highway 92, Washington County roads G-38 and W-38, and Keokuk County Road W-15.
The department said access to Lake Darling State Park and private properties in the work zone would “always be maintained during the project,” and told drivers to use caution around construction sites.
“Obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones,” the news release said. “As in all work zones, you should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.”
