WASHINGTON — A long out-of-use barn formerly located on Washington County Road G36 started its move to the Kalona Historical Village Tuesday, inching across paved and gravel roads on the first leg of its two-day journey.
The 17.3-mile relocation endeavor cut off commuter traffic on a handful of routes in rural Washington County Tuesday, and is expected to effectively shut down stretches of Highway 1 and Highway 22 Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., before the building’s expected arrival on Seventh Street in Kalona, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
“They will start moving the barn from the intersection of Iowa 1 and 170th Street, moving north and continuing east on East Avenue/Iowa 22,” the press release said. “They will be finished with the move around 2 p.m. when they arrive at Seventh Street.”
Tuesday morning saw a portion of G36 closed around 9 a.m., before the barn started winding its way down gravel roads. The list of closures that day included Spruce Avenue, 210th Street, Redwood Avenue, 190th Street/Washington County Road G26, 170th Street, and one intersection of Highway 1.
