Roadwork resumes on G36 this week

WASHINGTON — Travelers along County Road G36 (220th Street) may again face delays during their commute this week, as contractors complete the final steps of a paved shoulder along the roadway once known for near-misses when tires rolled over the pavement’s edge in rural Washington County.
The road is a path to and from work for many Washington residents with jobs in Iowa City and Riverside.
Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius said the last round of contractor work would put grooves along the newly paved shoulder, so that white paint marking the pavement’s new edge wouldn’t wear away when cars went over it. The work is expected to continue through the rest of this week.
While there may be other minor roadwork along G36 in the coming months, Thorius said any potential efforts would be minor touch-ups, and would not close any lanes to through-traffic as the current construction has.
“It’ll be the last step from the contractor standpoint,” Thorius said. “We may do some things here and there, just touch up some shoulders, other stuff. Nothing significant.”
