KALONA — A driver whose car rolled over into a field east of Kalona was arrested Thursday afternoon, Nov. 7, on seven charges according to police.
In an officer’s preliminary accident report, Washington County police said Adilio Aguilar-Lucas drove his van into the Orange Avenue-110th Street intersection and lost control of the car as it went off the road and tumbled into a field, crashing through a ditch and barbed wire fence in its path.
Aguilar-Lucas then allegedly left the scene.
“The passenger remained at … the accident location, but the operator did flee the accident location westbound on foot,” the report said. “A short time later, the Kalona fire chief did observe the operator to be attempting to hide in a grove of trees … on 14th Street.”
Police said they arrested the driver, who had the car’s keys, documentation and front license plate on him at the time.
The report said Aguilar-Lucas now faced seven charges, including driving under suspension, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and a preexisting charge for failure to appear at a pretrial hearing for accusations of drunk driving. Police said the driver also had a blood alcohol content of greater than 0.8% upon his arrest Thursday.
There were no injuries from the crash, according to the report, but the van was totaled by the damage.
