Roth contributes to dental event
Dr. Gary Roth of Fairfield was among the 14 southeast Iowa dentists who donated a total of $22,340 of free dental care to 107 children for the annual Give Kids a Smile event during February, National Children?s Dental Health Month.
According to the Lee County Health Department, which coordinates the Give Kids a Smile event for the Southeast Iowa Oral Health Coalition, area schools work hard to identify children and families who would benefit from the free dental care and provide transportation for the children to and from their dental appointments.
PreReStore diverts tons from landfill
During the three month period just completed, the Greater Fairfield Area Habitat for Humanity?s PreReStore diverted more than 29 tons of materials from the landfill for reuse or recycling.
Included in the total is 1,300 pounds of scrap metal sold during the quarter.
More than 134 donations were received, including a donation of implement paint from Tractor Supply Store.
Additional hours have been added at the PreReStore on the first Friday of each month.
A mascot-naming contest was held during the month of June. The new mascot, named by Rebecca Young, is ReDog.
In addition to paid staff, 12 volunteers worked nearly 350 hours in the store. Bill Shields graduated from the Experience Works program and became ?part-time employee number two? working in the PreReStore with the title of weekday manager.
The first remote collection event was held April 27-28 at the Mount Pleasant Hy-Vee Food Store parking lot. Plans are under way to hold another collection in partnership the Ottumwa Habitat for Humanity affiliate.
PreReStore Director Jim Pedrick, who has worked on the project the past two years, has resigned to take a job at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. John Loin and Kathy Brown are currently interviewing with candidates for store director.
