SALEM – Salem hosted its 140th Salem Old Settlers festival Friday through Sunday, which featured a parade, kids’ games, a new carnival, concerts and great food.
Sabrina Mathews, a member of the 10-person Old Settlers Committee that planned the event, was in charge of the carnival and Fun Run this year. She said attendance at the Friday night activities, such as the car show, the bean supper and the concerts of Jennifer Lynn Handling and Revolution, were down this year because of the extreme heat. However, Saturday’s weather was much better, and a good crowd lined the city’s streets for that morning’s parade, followed by kids’ games under the water tower and treats from four food vendors who had set up shop in Central Park. Salem also hired a new carnival company for this year, Joe’s Old Fashioned Carnival from Des Moines, which set up nine rides.
Saturday morning’s Fun Run through Salem’s Nature Trail featured a 2.2-mile course for adults and a half-mile course for kids. In the adult race, 114 people participated, while 28 kids participated in the shorter race.
The winner of the men’s division in the 2.2-mile was Tyler Sullivan, and the women’s division winner was Avery Fedler. In the kids’ division, the fastest boy was Austin Malcolm and the fastest girl was Dia Huebner. The youngest competitor was 3-year-old Jaxson Schilling, and the oldest was 84-year-old Janet Mills.
Mathews said the Old Settlers Committee will meet in October to review what parts of the festival went well and which should be changed for next year.
