The Schafer family proudly joined the ranks of Iowa's historic farming families when it received the prestigious Century Farm Award at the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 15, 2024.
The ceremony took place in the Livestock Building, honoring farms that have been in continuous ownership by the same family for 100 years or more.
The original Schafer farm was purchased on Feb. 28, 1924, by Ira J. and Lillian H. Schafer. Located on just under 60 acres, the farm was acquired for $21,100. The farm was later inherited by their son, Lee F. Schafer, and his wife, Karen, who still owns a portion of the original property.
Karen was joined at the ceremony by her two daughters, Deb Jesina (Tim) and Amy Schafer, as well as two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, making it a true multigenerational celebration.
The Century Farm Award, established in 1976, continues to celebrate Iowa's agricultural heritage, recognizing families like the Schafers who have played an enduring role in shaping the state’s rural landscape.
