MT. PLEASANT - On Feb. 10, the Henry County Board of Supervisors resolved to appoint an interim county attorney by Feb. 19.
Seeking legal advice from Deputy County Attorneys Steve Giebelhausen and Abbie Liechty, it was decided that, in the next 40 days, the county would appoint an interim county attorney, to serve until either June or November, when an election would be held. Interviews are set to begin on Friday, Feb. 13.
The motion to approve the interim attorney by Feb. 19 was unanimously approved by all three supervisors.
It is worth noting that the appointment can be challenged. Within 14 days of the appointment (before or after), a petition can be submitted for a Special Election, this election taking place within 32 days of the filing. The petition requires 566 signatures. Signatories must be eligible to vote in Henry County: that is to say, they must reside in the county, be at least 18 years old, and never have been convicted of a Felony.
