DES MOINES — The Southeast Iowa Union was recognized eight times by the Iowa Newspaper Association Thursday night, as the organization announced results from its 2023 Better Newspaper Contests.
“I’m really proud of our team,” Publisher Matt Bryant said. “They are hustling day in and day out to bring our readers the best news coverage in Southeast Iowa. I ask a lot of them and they continually rise to the challenge. These awards are further validation that the stories they tell, across all of our platforms, are not only appreciated by Union subscribers, readers, listeners and viewers, but also worthy and deserving of statewide accolades.”
The paper achieved top-three finishes in each of the following categories for the Daily Class I division:
- 1st place: Best Newspaper Website
- 1st place: Best Podcast, for Washington Weekly Review
- 1st place: Master Columnist, for Kalen McCain’s Hold This Thought
- 2nd place: Best Video: Nick Steffens’ Union Newsbreak
- 2nd place: Best News Feature Story: AnnaMarie Ward’s “Now, I am a survivor“
- 2nd place: Best Series: Kalen McCain’s “Hear that train a’comin’“
- 2nd place: Coverage of Agriculture, by AnnaMarie Ward, Andy Hallman and Kalen McCain
- 3rd place: Coverage of Government and Politics by Kalen McCain
Approximately 2,500 entries in dozens of categories were submitted to the contest and judged by class, based on circulation, by members of the North Carolina Press Association. All entries were published between Oct. 1, 2021 and Sept. 30, 2022. Daily Class I is for newspapers published daily with 5,000 circulation and under.
