The Iowa Senate has approved a bill that toughens the penalties for violators of school bus traffic laws.
The Des Moines Register says the bill, approved Thursday, increases the penalties for people who pass a bus when the red warning lights are flashing. Right now, it?s a fine of $200. The bill ups the fine to at least $250 and as high as $675 for a first offense and up to 30 days in jail.
Drivers who cause an injury from such a violation would face additional fines, jail time and license suspension. The bill goes to the House.
The measure is known as Kaydn?s Law, in memory of Kaydn Halverson. The 7-year-old from Kensett was killed last year by a driver who illegally passed a stopped school bus.
