WASHINGTON — The city of Washington is making a push to fill vacancies on a handful of its decision-making bodies, asking any interested volunteers to put their names in the hat for the municipal positions.
Mayor Pro Tem Millie Youngquist said the openings represented a chance for community members to get engaged in local government.
“The city needs local citizens to fill positions on these committees in order to keep the city running smoothly,” she said. “It's a great opportunity to be a part of Washington's future, to learn about how the city runs, and to make Washington a better place to live for all of us."
According to City Clerk Sally Hart, the following boards each have a seat open without a nominee yet scheduled for consideration by the City Council.
- Planning and Zoning Commission, five-year term.
- Park and Recreation Board, four-year term.
- Great Places Steering Committee, no term limit. The board will exist until 2032, 10 years after Washington received its Great Place designation.
- Historic Preservation Commission, three-year term.
- Board of Adjustment, five-year term.
The city’s July newsletter encouraged anyone interested to email City Clerk Sally Hart, at sallyhart@washingtoniowa.gov. Applicants can alternatively fill out the application form available on the city website and drop it off at City Hall, marked for the attention of Sally Hart.
