McNamee, in speaking with law enforcement officials in other counties, has been told that citizens have been receiving calls from a male subject claiming to be from the sheriff?s office. The caller claims to be a deputy sheriff, or reserve deputy sheriff, and tells the citizen that they have an active warrant for their arrest. The scammer claims that the citizen should submit money to them to avoid being arrested.
The sheriff said that his office does not call randomly call residents, requesting money to avoid being arrested on an arrest warrant.
Citizens who receive a call of this nature, McNamee said, should ask for a name and telephone number. If this information is or is not received, citizens are urged to contact their local law enforcement agency with any information they have.
