SIGOURNEY – Cade Molyneux rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Sigourney-Keota Cobras to a 42-12 home win against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks on Friday night.
Molyneux ended the game with 252 rushing yards on 32 carries, while his lone passing attempt resulted in a score.
The first half of the game was not indicative of the final score.
“I think early on, we were kind of killing ourselves, putting ourselves behind the chains,” Cobra head coach Jared Jensen said. “In the first half, they held us in check at times. We were getting those three and a half yards we wanted, but didn’t have any big gains.”
Molyneux scored his first touchdown of the game with 1 minute, 46 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give Sigourney-Keota a 7-0 lead.
The Hawks answered with a 30-yard touchdown run by Will Cavanagh five minutes into the second period. A failed 2-point conversion left the Cobras leading 7-6.
Sigourney-Keota then put together a drive that would take nearly all of the time left in the half.
“I give credit to Sigourney running the ball and chewing the clock up in the first half,” Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh said. “We could not get them off the field. They found a weak spot in our defense and just pounded it. Time of possession had to be overwhelming in the first half.”
With 10 seconds remaining in the half, Molyneux scored his second rushing touchdown of the game.
The Cobras kept the momentum going into the second half when Molyneux and Levi Crawford connected for a 33-yard passing touchdown just two minutes into the latter half.
The Cobras dominated the rest of the way.
“In the second half, I think we just wore them down and finally got some chunk yards out of the offense,” Jensen said.
Injuries began to pile up on a Mid-Prairie squad that was already shorthanded.
“Our tight end got hurt, and we were in a situation where we had to run a certain kind of formation,” Pete Cavanagh said. “We’re a little thin up front right now. We’ve had a few injuries and whatnot.”
Molyneux added another rushing touchdown in the third, while Crawford and Jake Moore scored rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The Hawks managed a fourth-quarter touchdown on Will Cavanagh’s 14-yard pass to Braden Hartley.
Will Cavanagh finished the game with 17 completions on 28 attempts for 136 yards, while rushing for 96 yards.
The Cobras, now 2-0 travel to Centerville on Friday, while Mid-Prairie (1-1) will host Iowa City Regina.
