WASHINGTON — The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event in Washington was cut short by poor weather on Saturday, a factor organizers also blamed for low turnout. Even so, Washington County Relay For Life Community Development Manager Denise Conrad said the fundraiser was successful overall.
“The funds raised go toward cancer research, patient services, and just information, early detection for anyone that is battling in Washington County,” she said in an interview at the event. “(Vendors) all paid a vendor fee to come, and then they’re also all donating part of their proceeds, and then we have teams that have been fundraising all year long.”
While the relay itself is an annual event, Conrad said the organization worked year-round to raise money.
She encouraged other community members to get involved.
“We are always looking for sponsors, participating team members,” she said. “It’s easy to form a team, all you have to do is get your friends and family involved, come out and enjoy, and give to a good cause.”
