WASHINGTON - Southeast Iowans awoke to snow plows and white skies Wednesday, as Iowa 511, a statewide map showing highway conditions, said the roads were “completely covered” in snow across the county before 9 a.m. in Washington and Keokuk counties.
The inclement weather canceled classes, business days and local government affairs, including the Washington school board’s much-anticipated meeting to decide on a proposed four-day school week, scheduled for Wednesday night.
A forecast from the National Weather Service said anywhere from 3-7 inches of accumulation could be expected in Southeast Iowa as of Wednesday morning.
“While light snow will begin overnight to daybreak, the main impacting time of snowfall will be Wednesday mid-morning into the afternoon when the heaviest rates result in hazardous travel,” said a statement from NWS on Facebook Tuesday night, ahead of the storm. “Snow will taper during Wednesday evening, but impacts to roads will likely last through the evening.”
