South Highway 1 in Fairfield opens

South Highway 1 in Fairfield opened to through-traffic on Friday, Dec. 8.

The road had been closed to through-traffic since May, when it was closed so that it could be rebuilt, widened from two to three lanes, with the addition of a roundabout at the intersection with Libertyville Road.

The City of Fairfield asks motorists to continue to use caution on the road since construction along the shoulder is continuing. According to a Facebook post from the City of Fairfield, the contractor will continue work adjacent to the roadway as long as weather permits. The city indicates that the intersection with Fillmore Avenue will remain a four-way stop while they work in that area but will return to a two-way stop (except during before and after school times as before) around Dec. 21.
