DES MOINES — The Southeast Iowa Union took home almost a dozen awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association’s annual convention Feb. 8, with a total of 11 nominations in the yearly contest for articles, series, ads and other products published by the state’s print news outlets between Oct. 1, 2022 and Aug. 31, 2023.
Among Class IV newspapers — those with multiple publications per week and a circulation count of 3,750 or lower — SEIU won first place for the Best Special Section Advertising (2023 Washington Women in Business Edition,) and the Best Advertising Series or Campaign Featuring Any Service or Merchandise Category (Children’s dental health.)
SEIU Publisher Matt Bryant said the paper and its staff were humbled by the awards.
“We are honored and thrilled to be recognized by the Iowa Newspaper Association,” Bryant said. “Our team works very hard to publish the high-quality content and advertising that our readers and advertisers deserve. It is always nice when that hard work is recognized, not only locally, but also by our peers across the state.”
The Southeast Iowa Union also received the following nominations, all in the Class IV division:
- Second and Third Place: Best Ad Featuring Automotive/Boats/Aircraft/Tires/Gasoline, Etc. (Pierce Auto Body and Fesler Auto Mail, respectively)
- Third Place: Best Special Section Advertising (Washington Journal’s Inside Story)
- Third Place: Best Ad Featuring Agriculture (Premier Sheep)
- Second Place: Best of Class Advertising (Children’s dental health)
- Third Place: Best Special Section Editorial (Washington Journal’s Women in Business Edition)
- Second Place: Best Podcast (Washington Weekly Review podcast)
- Third Place: Best News Feature (“More than 2,500 nativities on display in Washington”)
- Third Place: Best Continuing Coverage (Stories following a proposed book ban at the Kalona Public Library)
