An unknown number of residents have been evacuated from Addington Place in Fairfield due to water damage from a sprinkler break.
The Southeast Iowa Union heard from residents on Tuesday, Feb. 25 that their loved ones had to be relocated from the assisted living center on the west edge of Fairfield.
Laura Lepore, Addington Place of Fairfield media relations representative, confirmed in an email to The Union that certain areas of the building had been damaged from an “unexpected sprinkler system break.”
“To ensure everyone’s well-being, most residents were swiftly and safely relocated to sister communities within our network, while some chose to stay with family,” Lepore wrote. “Restoration efforts are already underway, and we are working diligently to return to normal operations as quickly as possible.”
Addington Place of Fairfield’s Facebook page also announced on Monday afternoon that it was suspending in-person tours while “we undergo essential building repairs due to recent water damage.”
Lepore wrote that Addington Place wanted to acknowledge all those who assisted in the relief effort “including our incredible team members, both at our community and our sister communities, who responded without hesitation.”
“Their experience, dedication and quick response ensured a smooth and safe transition for our residents,” Lepore wrote. “We are truly grateful for their unwavering commitment to our community.”
Jefferson County Emergency Management Coordinator and Fairfield Fire Chief Brett Ferrel said that his office was not involved in responding to the sprinkler break and subsequent resident evacuation at Addington Place.
The Union will continue to publish more information on this developing story as it becomes available.
