WASHINGTON — An annual fundraiser for St. James school is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11. The church and school’s fall festival at KC Hall immediately follows Sunday mass with a meal, as well as activities and an auction that stretch into the afternoon.
Proceeds benefit St. James school. Principal Rebecca Clarahan said it was the institution’s biggest fundraiser of the year.
“It supports the school with the general budget, including operational costs, educational materials, and school staff salaries,” she said. “This is what helps keep us going, keeps us open.”
While the event is open to all, Calahan said it was especially beneficial to new families at the school.
“Anyone that wants to come out and have a meal, the food is really good, there’s always a lot to choose from,” she said. “It’s a good way for our new families to get to know people and participate in helping the school.”
The meal starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 1 p.m. Food is $15 for adults, $8 for kids 6 and older, and free for anyone younger. Carryout meals are also available.
Per tradition, the auction is rather unconventional. While a few normal items are up for sale — gift baskets, student-made projects, food and drinks, etc. — some of the hottest lots include truck loads of firewood or gravel.
“It’s kind of funny, there will be several truck beds that are full of wood that people have donated that are really hot to get items,” Calahan said. “It actually does pretty well. The loads of gravel, that’s new, but people will totally go for it.”
