WASHINGTON — Laughter, dyed cornstarch and children ran through the streets around St. James Elementary in Washington Tuesday afternoon during the Catholic school’s second annual color dash fundraiser.
Co-organizer and Preschool Teacher Kim Farrell said sponsors provided materials for the event, while kids were asked to gather donations. Students at the Pre-K through fifth grade private school had raised a total of $4,100 as of Tuesday afternoon, although staff said they expected more donations to come in after the event concluded.
“We used to do fall food sales,” Farrell said. “Everybody does that, so we wanted to get away from that … and we had such a good response last year, we did it again.”
On top of the colorful optics and cheers of children, Farrell added that the event was easy to organize.
“It’s really simple to put on,” she said. “You just need volunteers, and color. And the kids have a blast!”
School Board Member and fellow organizer Katie Vittetoe said the money raised would help pay for new playground equipment.
She added that the afternoon outside brought school families together, allowing everyone to participate, since everyone was asked to raise money.
“The goal is to have more of a schoolwide event, rather than going door-to-door to sell out of booklets,” Vittetoe said. “It gives the kids an opportunity to have fun with parents and grandparents and whoever can run with them.”
