Iowa State Fair attendees visiting the Iowa Department of Transportation booth in the Varied Industries Building have an option to renew an Iowa driver?s license or ID where it is convenient by using self-serve kiosks in the booth.
The self-serve kiosks offer web-based service that extends the online renewal service available at www.iowadot.gov. Customers using self-service kiosks not only can renew an Iowa driver?s license or ID card electronically, but can also securely update the photo that will appear on the new driver?s license or ID card.
?Electronic renewal will help reduce congestion at driver?s license issuance locations and will save time for customers who need in-person service,? said Mark Lowe, director of the IDOT?s Motor Vehicle Division.
?During 2014, we hope to place self-serve kiosks in other locations convenient for customers.
?We?re very pleased with the early success of online renewal,? said Lowe. ?Since the mid-July launch, 6,169 customers have completed an online renewal transaction. At that pace, we anticipate online renewal will save Iowans more than $2.4 million in time and travel through the course of one year. As a point of reference, the number of transactions completed online since mid-July exceeds the total number of transactions completed at 73 of Iowa?s driver?s license issuance locations in fiscal year 2013. On a daily basis, online renewal creates a virtual driver?s license issuance site that handles about the same number of transactions as our largest issuance locations, with the benefit of being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.?
Eligiblity differs about who can renew a driver?s license or ID card online because of public safety and identity security concerns.
With some exceptions, online can be done if:
? Customer has a valid Iowa driver?s license or ID (not a commercial driver?s license).
? Between the ages of 18 and 70.
? The license or ID card has not been expired for more than a year.
? It is less than 180 days to the renewal date on the current driver?s license or ID card.
? Customer is a U.S. citizen.
? Customer does not have any medical or vision conditions impacting the ability to drive.
? No changes in the address or name printed on license.
Individuals should watch for imposter websites trying to take advantage of people. Remember, the only place to renew online is through IDOT?s official website at www.iowadot.gov.
Websites that have a website address ending in .com or .org, including IowaDriversLicense.org, are not affiliated with IDOT and cannot renew an Iowa driver?s license or ID card.
