Storm wreaks havoc in Wayland area

A severe thunderstorm Monday afternoon caused some structural damage in the Wayland area.

The major damage was on Franklin Avenue (county road W55) between 130th and 140th streets, approximately four miles southeast of Wayland.

There, a utility building on the west side of W55 was demolished, scattering debris in a farm field across the road for at least a half mile.

Proceed south a quarter of a mile and a turkey barn, owned by Robert Achen of Wayland according to Wayland city officials, had the north half of its roof torn from the rafters.

Reportedly, a barn north of Winfield was also leveled.

There is no official word whether the storm was accompanied by straight-line winds or a tornado. Efforts to reach Walt Jackson, Henry County Emergency Management coordinator, and Henry County Sheriff Rich McNamee and the Wayland Police Department were unsuccessful.

Mt. Pleasant received .20 inches of rain during the afternoon thunderstorm but there were no reports of extensive damage, save for a tree limb or two, in the Mt. Pleasant area.
