Structure fire leads to two fatalities

WASHINGTON - A structure fire in Washington early Saturday morning has led to two fatalities.

Sherry Lynn Bertsch, 58, and Michael Lee Shannan, 66, were pronounced dead at the scene of the fire by the Washington County Medical Examiner, according to a release from the Washington County Communications Center.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., the Washington County Communications Center received a report about a house fire at 2687 Wayland Rd. The Washington and Wayland fire departments were dispatched to the scene and extinguished the fire.

Members of the Washington County Ambulance, Washington County Rescue, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Washington Police Department and State Fire Marshall's Office as well as Jones Funeral Home and Alliant Energy assisted on the scene.

Currently, the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the incident.
