Summer lunches

In an effort to ensure children have healthy food available to them, the Fairfield Community School District is participating in the Summer Food Service Program, providing free lunches to children between the ages of 2 and 18, such as those pictured. There are no income guidelines for the program, and children need not be Fairfield residents to partake in the program. Part of the Department of Education?s nutrition initiative, the summer lunch program is fully funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. Fairfield Community School District cooks prepare the meals, which are served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday through Friday at Pence Elementary School. Meals will be served every weekday through Aug. 9. A district spokesperson said that to date, the highest number of children served in one day was 23. ?We want to invite all children to come and eat,? said Fred McElwee, director of auxiliary services for the school district.
