There is a move under way in state government to increase the state?s sales tax to finance clean water quality initiatives in Iowa, Supervisor Gary See told his peers during Tuesday?s Henry County Board of Supervisors meeting.
See said the matter was discussed early Tuesday morning during a meeting of the Mt. Pleasant Area Development Commission to draft its legislative priorities.
?I understand why they are doing it, but I think they could do it in a different way than raising the sales tax,? remarked Supervisor Marc Lindeen.
See also briefed the board on Pioneer Cemetery Day Sept. 11 at the Old Baptist Pioneer Cemetery near Wayland. The Henry County Pioneer Cemetery Commission (HCPCC) hosts the event annually, to brief the public on the history of a pioneer cemetery in the county.
HCPCC also cleans up and does maintenance work at the cemetery prior to the occasion.
?It was a nice-looking cemetery,? See said. ?They (HCPCC) do good work.?
Supervisors appointed Martha Francy to the Henry County Historic Preservation Commission. Francy had previously served on the commission before taking a brief hiatus from service.
In the only other agenda item, John Pullis, Henry County Conservation Department director, reported on the department?s Sept. 12 board meeting. A story from the meeting was published in the Sept. 13 News.
