Survey open for feedback on Fairfield school plans

FAIRFIELD — Residents of the Fairfield Community School District can now take an online survey to provide feedback on the strategic direction of the school district.
The survey was put together by the firm FEH Design, which the school board hired to investigate various options for the district in terms of remodeling its buildings, constructing new buildings, or possibly consolidating some of the four existing buildings into a smaller number, maybe even a single building.
Fairfield School Superintendent Laurie Noll posted a message on the district’s website saying what prompted the school board to issue this survey.
“In 2021, Fairfield Community School District asked voters for a new $30 million Middle School building, and the voters did not support it,” Noll wrote. “The district listened to voters and re-evaluated the process to look at a long-range plan for the district. A facilities assessment was completed in 2020, and the district partnered with the architect firm FEH Design. FEH Design then reviewed the assessment. The assessment identified that hundreds of thousands of dollars need to be invested into each of the four school buildings for maintenance, safety, and ADA requirements. The district recruited a community advisory task force to look at long-term visions for the district’s facilities. The school board wants to make wise decisions that align with the community's long-term visions and financial capabilities so funding is not expended in a shortsighted way. Please take a few minutes to respond to this important survey.”
The survey asks residents if they have school-age children, whether they work in the district, whether they have already provided any feedback through the public planning meetings the district held in the fall, and several other questions. The survey gives respondents the options of investigating the options FEH Design created for various configurations of the buildings onto a different number of campuses. Respondents get to see the drawings for each one that FEH Designers made last fall.

Michael Gehl, project designer with FEH Design, tapes drawings to a wall at the Fairfield ACT Building showing possible layouts for the district’s buildings, which ranged from making additions to all four buildings, to combining the grades into three, two or one structure. Residents can now view these drawings online and give feedback about which they prefer by visiting the school district’s website at fairfieldsfuture.org (Andy Hallman/The Union)
