Tax cuts become official
State Rep. Joe Mitchell
Mar. 9, 2022 6:00 am
On Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Reynolds signed historic tax cuts into law, marking the long-awaited finish to a successful journey of conservative lawmaking.
These tax cuts are huge for all Iowans! The average Iowa family saves thousands of dollars each year, and retirees will no longer be required to pay income tax. I advocated for this bill because it especially puts money back in the pockets of middle-class Iowans.
The official signing happened at a local business, and I was there with many of my fellow legislators to celebrate this new era of low taxes in the state of Iowa.
State of the Union Response
Later that day, Gov. Reynolds gave the Republican response to the State of the Union. This was a huge honor for the state of Iowa, and the governor represented our community in the best possible way.
Fairfield FFA Breakfast
This morning, I joined the Fairfield FFA for their Pancake Breakfast. I was able to eat with a few students, administrators, and community members as we talked about the future of Fairfield.
A few students were interested in politics, so we discussed the process of running for office at a young age. I told them about my nonprofit that helps young people run for state and local office all across the country, and explained how they would be able to get involved.
The pancakes were incredible, and it was great to be back in Fairfield High School.
Protecting Women's Sports
I voted to protect women's sports last week, and met with female athletes from across the state yesterday at the bill's signing. This legislation is a step forward in proactively ensuring a level playing field for students across the state.
Jefferson County Health Center Meeting
This week, I stopped by Jefferson County Health Center for a meeting and tour. I met with Brian Hunger, Curtis Smith, and many more members of the JCHC team to discuss some of the proposed legislation that could affect their patients and employees.
The Health Center is a beautiful building, and I had a wonderful time on the tour. As I told the center administrators, I've had an open line of communication with other hospitals in Southeast Iowa, and hope to start that same dialogue with the Jefferson County Health Center.
Henry County Central Committee Meeting
The Henry County Central Committee was kind enough to let me join their meeting Thursday night. I talked about my re-election campaign, and we discussed some of the funding opportunities their committee faces. Thank you for having me!
