FAIRFIELD — A train engine caught fire east of Fairfield early Wednesday morning.
The fire occurred at 12:47 a.m. just outside of town, near the intersection of Pine Avenue and 205th Street. Fairfield Fire Department driver Brad Waugh said no one was hurt in the fire, and that there were no visible flames by the time the firefighters arrived.
“We sprayed it with water to cool the engine off,” he said. “We ended up moving the train back to an intersection where it was easier for us to access, so we could cool it off some more.”
The train belonged to Burlington Northern Santa Fe. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters returned to service at 2:23 a.m.
