Solid waste collection fees are going up in Mt. Pleasant.
On Monday night, the Mt. Pleasant City Council approved the first reading of a 50 cent increase for solid waste stickers, from $1.50 to $2 per sticker.
“With COVID and everything else, the cost of living and doing business has gone up,” City Administrator Brent Schleisman said.
He added that the last time the sticker price was raised was in 2010.
“We’ve had a good long run without adjusting rates,” he said.
The city uses a sticker system for trash collection.
Residents pay a $3 monthly base fee on their utility bills, then they pay for stickers for their trash bags.
“Each bag of trash has to have a sticker,” Schleisman said. “The more trash you have, the more you have to pay.”
The rate increase will face two more votes by the City Council before it becomes official.
Once passed, the new sticker rates will go into effect on July 1.
