State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald traveled to Fairfield today to highlight Sen. Becky Schmitz?s help in writing a fiscally responsible state budget during the 2010 legislative session.
Fitzgerald said Senator Schmitz?s work to balance the budget without raising taxes was instrumental in ensuring a bright future for Iowa.
?As we exit the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, things are looking good for Iowa. In fact, for the first time in our history, Iowa has the highest ratings from all three rating agencies. Only seven other states can say that,? Fitzgerald stated. ?The experts agree that Iowa is in a good financial position. One thing they point to is the first-rate fiscal management of our state, which Sen. Schmitz was an integral part of in the legislature. Her work is making Iowa more competitive and saving taxpayer dollars.?
?We balanced the state budget without raising taxes and have money in the bank,? Schmitz said. ?We?re projected to have nearly $500 million in our savings account next year. As Treasurer Fitzgerald knows, that?s not something most other states can say.?
