FAIRFIELD — Another tree fell down in Fairfield’s Central Park this week, and this time it landed on the bandstand.
A severe thunderstorm swept through Fairfield Thursday morning, June 29, and the high winds caused a tree in Central Park to fall down. The tree stood just southwest of the Ron Prill Bandstand, and it came to rest nearly on top of it, with its branches going under the roof. It was not clear if the bandstand sustained any damage.
Later that day at about 1 p.m., a group of onlookers had assembled in Central Park to survey the downed tree. One of those was resident Aaron Sheetz. As Sheetz approached the tree to get a closer look, a loud crack rang out, and another branch on the tree came crashing down. Sheetz was nearly struck by the limb, and the leaves on it brushed his shoulder as he ran away, leaving a green stain on his shirt.
“I had no idea that was coming down, man oh man,” Sheetz said about the branch that nearly struck him. “I felt something on my shoulder. Thank God it fell today, because as bad as it was, it could have fallen on someone during a band concert and smashed several people. It would have killed people, probably.”
By 1:15 p.m., employees of the parks department had arrived on scene with a woodchipper and began cutting the downed tree and feeding it into the chipper.
Just two days earlier on Tuesday, June 27, a different tree in the park lost a huge limb and landed on top of a couple of park benches. The entire tree was later removed because it was rotten.
