The Riverside Area Community Club (RACC) has received a couple of large donations in the past week to support TrekFest. One week after learning the Riverside Casino would pledge $3,000 to TrekFest, RACC received a donation for $1,500 and then another for $5,000.
RACC president Ken McCracken said that the club is making good progress toward its goal of $10,000 but has not yet reached it. He said the club has set a deadline for April 20 to raise the $10,000, which the club members believe to be the minimum amount necessary for TrekFest. TrekFest is the last weekend in June.
?We have to pay for police officers, port-o-potties, insurance and logistics,? said McCracken. ?We are extremely happy with the support from the community. We hope they stick with us and make the 27
th
TrekFest one of the better years.?
McCracken said the club will make an announcement in late April about what, if any, events RACC can sponsor for TrekFest.
?We can?t afford to wait much longer than that,? said McCracken.
The $5,000 donation came from a group in Iowa City known as the Mindbridge Foundation. According to the organization?s Website, the Mindbridge Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that provides resources to people interested in science fiction. Members of RACC attended the group?s meeting on Wednesday to ask for financial support. The group agreed to donate $5,000 to the science fiction-related events at TrekFest such as the parade and the costume contest.
River Products Company in Iowa City gave RACC $1,500 earlier this week. River Products has sponsored the rodeo in previous years, although this year it did not earmark the donation for any event in particular.
RACC board member Mike Meinders said the rodeo is a separate expense and not included in the $10,000 the group considers as a bare minimum. In fact, he said the rodeo itself costs up to $10,000.
Phil Richman, one of the representatives of the Riverside History Center, said that a couple hundred dollars have been donated to TrekFest at the museum.
