Children and their parents took to the streets of Wellman on Saturday night on a quest for Halloween treats.
Many cities in the region curtailed Halloween festivities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wellman traditionally hosts a Halloween party at the Wellman Skate Rink, but city officials opted to cancel that this year.
'We felt that it would be better to be cautious this year,” Wellman City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said while passing out candy in front of City Hall Saturday.
In Kalona, the Optimist Club opted to cancel its usual Halloween party at the Kalona Community Center.
The cities, though, decided to go ahead with trick-or-treating.
Litwillwer said that the city of Wellman coordinated with the cities of Kalona and Riverside to schedule trick-or-treating at the same time – 5:30-7:30 p.m. – on Halloween night.
'We coordinated the time to keep people from going from town to town,” Litwiller said.
Parents were happy that their children were able to trick-or-treat.
'It's a beautiful night, and the kids deserve it,” Asenath Shetler said, while accompanying her children, Brice, Kendon and Ceilie, around Wellman.
Another parent, Andrea Harms, said, 'You have to go on and live a normal life.”
