OSKALOOSA ? The Fairfield boys? golf team was handed its first loss of the season Thursday by Mount Pleasant.
It didn?t take long for the Trojans to bounce back.
Playing against an annually strong field Tuesday at the Oskaloosa Invite on Edmundsen Golf Course, the Trojans made it a one-team race with a winning score of 311. Norwalk?s 330 landed them in second place.
?Terrific playing by our guys tonight,? said Fairfield coach Mick Flattery. ?They were really ready to go against a real good field.?
The strong performance at the invitational added five more wins to the Trojans? season record. Fairfield now sits at 17-1 overall as the squad enters the second half of 2012.
Fairfield benefitted from having several golfers rise to the occasion Tuesday, and the team featured the invite?s three lowest scores. Cody Kool fired a 3-over-par 73 to become the meet medalist, Matt Carr was second lowest at 77 and Alex Shier shot a 79 for third lowest.
?Great to see different guys stepping up, which shows that we can have the depth that you need come the postseason,? Flattery said.
Kool, in particular, impressed after playing the first four holes at 3-over-par. The senior shot even-par the rest of the way, made two birdie putts and played the par-5 holes at 1-under-par.
Both Carr and Shier played the par-5 holes at even-par.
Davis Lowenberg, Fairfield?s No. 1 and the 10th ranked golfer in Class 3A, finished with an 82 to round out Fairfield?s score. Lowenberg recorded two birdies on the day and played the par-5 holes at even-par.
?[Lowenberg] didn?t play his best tonight, but he was really pulling for the other three to come in with low scores,? said Flattery. ?That?s a great teammate right there.?
Altogether, the low four Trojans shot a 156 on the front nine and a 152 on the back nine. The team recorded six birdies on the day and went 6-over-par on the par-5 holes.
Alternates for Fairfield were CJ Shipman at 85 and Landon Gamrath with a score of 87.
Other team scores at this year?s Osky Invitational included Mount Pleasant at 331, Washington at 332 and Oskaloosa at 335. Meskwaki Settlement?s 474 placed them sixth.
Last season, the Trojans finished third with a final tally of 317; Washington?s 311 won and Oskaloosa was second at 314.
The Trojans will once again compete against the Demons at a four-team tournament Thursday in Washington. Oskaloosa and Williamsburg also will be in attendance.
