Fairfield?s volleyball season came to a halt Thursday in Tiffin.
The Trojans could not top Clear Creek-Amana, and fell to the Clippers 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 in the second round of the regional playoffs.
Fairfield got down 4-0 to start the match. The Trojans then mounted a comeback, competing in a back and forth game with the Clippers until it was tied at 20. Fairfield couldn?t close it out however, and it was Clear Creek-Amana?s match the rest of the way.
?Fundamentally we had some major mistakes,? Fairfield coach Nancy Diers said, ?but I felt great going into set two.?
Set two didn?t go as well for the Trojans. Down 19-10 at one point, Fairfield?s comeback attempt was not enough. Going into set three, Diers knew her team needed to step it up to avoid elimination.
?We were still having trouble passing the ball,? Diers said, ?and we were not being as aggressive as we wanted to be. That?s why we couldn?t run some of the plays we wanted to.?
The Trojans played well in set three and it was close throughout. Clear Creek-Amana finished it out, ending Fairfield?s season.
?This is a good stepping stone for younger players to see the preparation and work it takes to get to these next levels,? Diers said.
Senior Marisa Repp led the team with 11 kills. Madison Roberts was second on the team in kills with four. Seniors McKenna Ledger and Hanna Greiner had kills as well in their final games as Trojans. Greiner provided the squad?s only block of the night.
Sydney Burnett and Mackenzie Flattery led Fairfield in digs with 12 each. Valerie Payne had 10 digs of her own.
?This group of girls was finding their niche and finally getting their groove,? Diers said. ?They wanted to be in the regional final game.?
Fairfield finished the year 20-15 and got second place in the Southeast Conference.
