RIVERSIDE — A UTV crashed into the back of a Ford Ranger on Highway 22 near the 218 northwest ramp in Riverside Sunday evening, according to a minimal crash report from the Iowa State Patrol.
The report said the accident sent UTV occupants Mary Stumpf and Terry Stumpf to the University of Iowa Hospital, the latter by AirCare. Neither was using a seat belt.
The truck driver, an unidentified 14-year-old from Riverside, “sustained no injuries,” according to the report, which said the incident “remains under investigation.”
Another entry in the county Call For Service Log, added roughly an hour after the crash, said an emergency road closure in the area was ignored by several drivers. The log added that a deputy “will be issuing several citations” to those operators.
In a statement, Washington County Chief Deputy Shawn Ellingson encouraged residents to yield to such closures in the future, saying the Iowa State Patrol needed the temporary shutdown to conduct a safe and thorough investigation.
“It is important that when approaching an accident scene, drivers slow down and watch for direction from emergency workers,” he said in an email. “Drivers should focus on driving slow and safely. Please avoid trying to see what has happened. Fire, Rescue, EMS and Law enforcement appreciates everyone paying attention and avoiding the area.”
