Rain didn’t dampen the mood at the annual “Trunk or Treat” Sunday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Fairfield.
The Halloween-themed event was just moved indoors, into the McCleary Building, where kids in costume visited the many booths set up around the perimeter and partook of the games in the center such as bowling, ring toss and pumpkin decorating.
The event was organized by Iowa State University Extension & Outreach employees Hilary Lanman, Cindy Hall, Jeri Crile and Rachel Fishel. Lanman said it was unfortunate that the weather did not cooperate and the event had to be moved inside. Luckily, she could see days in advance that rain was in the forecast, and told the vendors on Friday night to prepare for an indoor event.
The event attracted 316 kids and 236 adults, Lanman said. She said that was less than a typical year, but she was pleased with the turnout given the inclement weather.
Inside the McCleary Building, attendees collected candy from the vendors and learned about 4-H by going through a maze and visiting several 4-H clubs that had set up booths. Fairfield High School’s Student Council helped set up for the event.
Fairfield Schools Superintendent Laurie Noll and Curriculum Director Chuck Benge set up a booth to give away books. Every child who went through the line got one free book from the table, which had a wide selection to choose from with offerings for toddlers up through high-school age. Benge said the books were purchased with grants he applied for, which gave the district free or heavily discounted books.

Fairfield High School FFA set up this booth at Sunday’s “Trunk or Treat.” The display is from the school’s Advanced Agricultural Mechanics Class, which built it to demonstrate farm safety measures such as being careful around power lines, on a hill and around livestock.
