Jefferson County Sheriff?s Office responded at 6:07 p.m. Saturday to a two-vehicle accident on Packwood Road, about a half-mile north of Highway 34.
Raymond Steffen, 48, of Ottumwa, was driving a semi-tractor trailer south on Packwood Road.
Heath Huggins, 34, of Bloomfield, was driving a Jeep north on Packwood Road. He told deputies he tried to make more room for the semi by moving right, and the Jeep fell off the roadway; when he came back onto the road, he lost control, crossed the center line sideways and the Jeep collided with the semi, puncturing a hole in the semi?s fuel tank. Approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the road. Debris from the Jeep was spread across the roadway and in the ditch. Huggins had been transporting LED lights and band equipment in the Jeep.
Huggins was seen by EMS but refused transport, saying he would go by private vehicle to Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
Fairfield Fire Department responded at 6:12 p.m. and used three bags of oil dry on the fuel spill. Three firefighters worked two hours each on site, returning to the station at 9:32 p.m.
The county?s Secondary Road Department covered the fuel spill with sand and plowed it to the side of the road. The Haz-mat team based in Ottumwa and DNR were notified.
The clean up continued on Sunday, according to the sheriff?s report.
Huggins was cited for failure to maintain control.
