Vera L. Scheer, 91, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Salem, died Monday, May 18, 2015, at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A private family graveside funeral service will be held at a later date at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril. Rev. Jared Haley of the Salem Friends Church will officiate. Graveside Military Honors will be provided by the Henry County Honor Guard. There will be no visitation at ...

Vera L. Scheer, 91, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Salem, died Monday, May 18, 2015, at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A private family graveside funeral service will be held at a later date at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril. Rev. Jared Haley of the Salem Friends Church will officiate. Graveside Military Honors will be provided by the Henry County Honor Guard. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, which is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Scheer was born June 24, 1924, in North Platte, Neb., the daughter of Selby Clyde and Florence Reva (Keck) Sprouse. She moved with her family to Iowa at an early age. She graduated from Bonaparte High School in 1940, and later attended the former Burlington Business School. In 1941, she married Frank ?Bud? Shaw. The couple later divorced. On Sept. 1, 1993, in Reno, Nev., she married Vernon George Scheer. The couple made their home in Salem. He preceded her in death.
Scheer was a World War II veteran of the US Army Air Corps and a member of the Women?s Army Corps Service (WACS). She later reenlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, and Neb. After a short tour of duty, she worked in the Federal Civil Service for the Air Force in Guam, the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Veterans Administration in Florida. She concluded her working career with Social Security Administration in Iowa, Colorado and Florida. She retired in 1996.
Scheer was an avid reader and book collector.
Scheer is survived by one brother, Clyde Sprouse, of Keosauqua; and one sister, Grace (Harold) Mills, of Salem.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; and one sister, Carolyn McLeland Bolin.
